Get it together Sista! Prov 31 study

Proverbs 31:30
Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

We’re so excited to be starting a new series during September called “Get it together Sista!” We’re going to look at Proverbs 31:10-31 and pull out some key points to remind us of standards to strive for as we get our priorities in order. We will also feature organizational posts and re-blog content from other authors. Look out for these and also check our recipe and home and lifestyle section on the site. We hope you enjoy. So let’s dig in!

Did you know that Proverbs 31:10-31 is actually a Hebrew acrostic poem – an ode to the woman of virtue? Isn’t that wonderful? It certainly shows how important she is. I’ve found myself in this season, pouring over these verses, looking for the values that I pray should become part of my character and yours. This type of woman exemplifies qualities often overlooked in our world today where pride, vanity, self worship and undignified behavior are so popular. Today we’re not going to start at the top of this poem but jump to the bottom and take a look at the foundation of such a woman.

In Proverbs 31:30, the Hebrew alphabetical word at the start the verse is Sheqer (deception, falsehood, fraud, in vain, sham, untruth). This woman separates herself from falsehood and untruths and clings to the Lord. Beauty is mentioned as vanity but let’s not just think of physical appearance. Hebel (vanity) literally means – vapor and breath. It is synonymous with delusion, emptiness, fleeting, fraud, futility, idols, worthless things. So anything that seeks to delude us with an appearance of importance when really it is empty and of no value is vanity and we should separate ourselves from it.

Let’s make a list of vanities/fleeting things that commonly tempt us (do add your own):

-What people think (their impression of you) – VANITY
-Anxiety- about bills, finances, health, material things – VANITY
-Seeking acceptance/trying to fit in to societal pressure/following trends – VANITY

This type of woman has her priorities straight. She knows that her praise-worthy works come not by being concerned about worthless things but by having a deep, reverential awe and respect for the Lord. Prov 9:10 “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

So as we “get it together”, let’s pray- “Lord I run to you, separate me from vanities which distract me from your best for me. Help me to fear you and receive the wisdom that you freely give. Amen!
