16 She considers a field and buys it; out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. 17 She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. 18 She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night. 19 In her hand she holds the distaff and grasps the spindle with her fingers. 20 She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies the merchants with sashes. 27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.
One of the things I am truly grateful for, is that I am blessed to know women who are strong, resourceful and not given to idleness. When times are tough..the resources deep within them begin to rumble inside and they find a way to provide for their families. Like miners digging gold out of deep trenches, these women set about their daily enterprises..be they small or great, and industriously build something for their families.
When my friend Robertha was newly married and still a student, she wanted to bring in some extra income. With two of her friends, she started a female clothing business. They didn’t want the steep overheads so they used friends’ homes to show and sell the outfits. They served refreshments at these “dress parties” and it was such an enjoyable and different shopping experience. With the low overheads, the clothing (which were really good quality I might add), could be sold at lower prices and boy did they sell!!! She kept herself busy and was able to contribute income to her home.
My other friend Kay, was made redundant from her job at the beginning of the economic crisis. She didn’t sit, complain and let the days pass in front of the television. Instead she prayed and got busy starting a business of her own, Event Plan-it and in the last 2 years she’s been able to add another enterprise..Ezee Cuisine products.
Another lady I know turned her passion for child-care into income at a time when she had no job and she also made delicious local meals on Saturdays to provide a living for herself.
Some have gone back to school to improve their education to find better job opportunities. Others have turned something they enjoy into earnings or changed careers entirely. Some faithfully work along side their husbands in business or ministry while others work diligently to provide for their children or other family members on a single income.
Is it easy for them? No! Have they found their way into the lap of luxury? Not all of them, but what I love about them and what encourages me is that they didn’t allow their circumstances to press them down. They have worked and still work vigorously, seeing that “their trading is profitable.” Some of them I know..don’t go to bed early and others get up before dawn to prepare for the day. The other thing I know is that even as they work hard to make a living, they are not miserly and are still willing to give to friends, family and strangers who are in need.
So to these industrious hard-working women, and others of you out there who are like them, we celebrate you! If you’re in a situation where you need some encouragement, know that God has placed unique resources within you. Prayerfully and diligently mine them out and talk with others who can help you do so. You may discover another income stream and build something that benefits your family and many more. So don’t be idle!! Get up! Get out there and work for the Lord is with you! You can do all things through Him who gives you strength. I pray for His supernatural power to work in you today and always.
