Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope is in the Lord his God,
As we were driving from my in-laws house after a fun filled and food-filled Christmas afternoon, my husband and I were discussing the overcast weather that had accompanied the day. He told me that the weather was affecting the region and that in other islands people had actually lost their lives due to the bad weather. I was shocked. What had been just a mild inconvenience for us, had been much worse in other places and just like that, families and friends were now grieving. On a day usually accompanied by laughter and celebration. I pray for healing and recovery for those families.
This led me to think about all the sudden disasters that happen worldwide. Things over which we have no power to stop or to change. That led me to call to mind the hope that is our God. When we look at the state of the world around us, it is very easy for hopelessness to creep in. I am sure we have heard that sentiment expressed by others. Hopelessness causes people to give up, to compromise, to give in. We have no idea what tomorrow holds but our hope is in the Lord.
That is why Psalm 146 is wonderful. Every time I read it, there is rejoicing and….hope. Yes there are those who are hungry, fatherless and widowed but above all of that there is God who executes justice for the oppressed. Who raises those who are bowed down. No matter who we are, our trust must be in the Lord and He is able to deliver. That is cause to praise Him. That is cause to rejoice in the face of all of the decay and destruction that we see around us. We might not be personally affected but we can pray, rejoice and speak those words over the lives of those who we know are having a rough time.
Spread hope in what ever way you can!
Almighty God, I pray that you would deposit hope into the hearts of those who have given up and who believe that things will not change. Cause them to know Your love and undying compassion for them. Lift them up with the knowledge that You are greater than any circumstance, no matter how big it would seem. In Jesus’ name, amen.
